We are working on a project schedule that shows us completing a bridge 2 months early. Our schedulers want to extend the durations to use up the float. What is right or wrong with this?

First, a good check of the logic should be done to ensure that no critical logic is missing, especially relationships related to logistics. Logistical scheduling relationships are often overlooked or disregarded. Never blindly increase durations for the sake of using up schedule float. Often, critical relationships were missed. Punchout is often scheduled optimistically.

I would investigate if weather conditions are factored into the work activities, also investigate delivery delays. I’m not a fan of optimistic durations and delivery times. Also shop drawing reviews, revise and resubmit, approvals. These can kill production.
